Every year in the U.S. as many as 4,500 babies die without warning before celebrating their first birthday. Many of these deaths are from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), suffocation, and accidents during sleep, and could be prevented by following safe sleep recommendations from First Candle and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

First Candle and HALO‘s missions are to educate parents on the importance of safe sleep in preventing infant deaths so more babies live to their first birthday. The  National “Back to Sleep”Campaign has saved thousands of lives since it’s inception in 1994. Babies need to sleep on their backs, with no loose bedding,  to minimize the risk of SIDS.

The HALO® SleepSack® wearable blanket, invented by a dad who lost his daughter to SIDS,  replaces loose blankets in the crib for a safer night’s sleep. To read more about the HALO story, click here.

To recognize October as SIDS Awareness Month, we are giving away three $150 shopping sprees to HALO from HALO and First Candle to keep your baby safe! Pledge to follow these safe sleep guidelines:

  • Always place baby to sleep on his/her back.
  • Always place your baby to sleep in a crib, portable crib, play yard or bassinet that meets current safety standards. Bassinets should not have padded sides.
  • Use a firm mattress that fits snugly and is covered with only a fitted sheet.
  • Never put any soft bedding items in your baby’s sleep space. This includes pillows, blankets, quilts, bumper pads, sheepskins and stuffed animals or toys.
  • Do not let your baby get too warm. Dress your baby in lightweight sleep clothing and use a wearable blanket  for warmth instead of loose blankets.
  • Never use positioners or wedges in your baby’s sleep space.
  • Your baby should always sleep alone, not with a parent, child or pet.
  • For the first six months, put your baby’s sleep space in the room with or alongside the parent or caregiver’s bed.
  • Give your baby a clean, dry pacifier that is not attached to a string for naps and at night.
  • Once your baby begins to pull up or stand, remember to remove mobiles and crib gyms from the sleep space. Also be sure the crib or other safe sleep space is a safe distance from windows, draperies and blind/shade cords.
